Budapest Pop up will unfold over two weeks in mid June. It is a series of events, mostly in NYC but some in Washington DC and even in Ottawa, Canada, to show why and how Budapest today is very much part of those global exchanges and transfers that are more constitutive of culture today than they have ever been before. Budapest is not an essence suspended in time – it is the constellation of influences and output, changing every minute. You cannot reduce it to some formula and the only way to perceive what is about in a given moment is to experience it. In this spirit, Budapest Pop Up is an attempt to expose American audiences to this moment, with echoes from the past and gazes thrown towards the future. First and foremost, however, it is about presencing – presenting the present. Come to the events to see how Budapest is distinct, but not foreign, different but not alien. Join this transatlantic cultural exchange and dialogue from June 8 to 20, to get a sense of Central Europe’s global cultural and creative impact today.

For some inexplicable reason by Gábor Reisz is an unconventional coming of age story, about the unbearable lightness of being a youngster, with an exact glimpse of the city where Áron lives, Budapest. Áron is a pathetic 29-year-old guy, who tries to find himself in the storm of his job seeking, his recent break up, his extremely critical parents and his own complexes. After purchasing a ticket to Lisbon he seems to be able to start living his own life eventually.
Gábor Reisz was born in 1980 in Budapest, Hungary. He started his studies at the Hungarian University of P.E in 1999, later received his major degree at Eötvös Lóránd University on Film Theory and Film History Faculty in 2003. He was enrolled to the University of Theatre and Film in Budapest as a film and television director in 2006. After several short movies he wrote and directed during these years: The reason of denial, honestly – 2006, 8 (omnibus film) – 2007, Nothing and Good documentary – 2007, Changing-room – 2008, Somebody’s Something -2009, On a lower level – 2011 and Peter (omnibus film) in 2013 he directed his debut feature film, For some inexplicable reason in 2014.

László Gőz is a stalwart of Hungarian neoavantgarde music, a great jazz trombone player teaming up with György Kurtág jr., a new music composer and researcher at SCRIME LabRi at Bordeaux University, and crossover sensation Lukács Miklós who returns to NYC after his spring engagement at the MET with Charles Lloyd. Three standout musicians playing together on a single night, bringing three sides of contemporary music together in one concert. A unique event, one of the few musts for contemporary music lovers.
László Gőz, Hungarian jazz and contemporary classical musician, professor of music and producer is a well-known studio musician and has performed on over 100 albums. In 1996 he founded Budapest Music Center – Hungarian Music Information Center, then in 1998 BMC Records, which has released about a 100 Hungarian contemporary, jazz, and classical CD’s up to now. In 2003 László Gőz was awarded with the Gold Cross Of Merit Of The Republic Of Hungary for his work in the field of contemporary Hungarian music. As a musician, his collaborations have included work with Steve Reich, Petr Kotik, Alvin Curran, Chris Newman, Jiggs Wigham and Carl Fontana.

Astro-Hungarian folk punk is how bandleader and Grammy winner Frank London describes it, but it is also contemporary, at times postmodern and deconstructivist, at times archeological-conservationist – Glass House Orchestra is a supergroup of 8 established musicians with various backgrounds and countries who take on the wonderfully complex Jewish musical tradition of Hungary. The outcome is in fact astral or stellar, and thus the label „Astro-Hungarian” is certainly not undeserved. Muzsikas are world music royalty. When they take the stage – and they have been taking the stage for four decades – an unparalleled dedication to skill and traditions shines through – interlaced with real outlaw mentality. This time, they take their Hungarian Jewish collection from Transylvania, unearthed through exacting research and years of fieldwork in the smallest of villages, and present the Maramaros material with outstanding singer Ágnes Herczku. This is a double bill not to be missed.

Jazz violinist extraordinaire Luca Kézdy leads a trio of musicians who explore the limits and the role of the violin in jazz, while carefully guarding their openness towards musical heritages of members, notably Hungarian Jewish music and Central European folk traditions. Santa Diver has been making waves in Europe for the past half-decade as surprise standout performers at various festivals, captivating audiences with the exceptionally structured and varied violin parts that permeate the music, complemented by bass and percussion that emancipate themselves from rhythm section to contributing partners of the musical trialogue happening on stage. Recognized recording artists, Santa Diver are to be experienced live, so that one gets a true impression of the ability of members to communicate through music and take their playing to the next level.
