Hardly anyone in Europe can still claim that climate change is some distant scientific prediction. The historic heat waves of the summer of 2026, months of severe drought, devastating wildfires, catastrophic flooding, and increasingly deadly weather events have made one thing unmistakably clear: climate change is no longer a future threat. It is a present-day crisis. Yet while Europeans are becoming increasingly aware of that reality, a strikingly different trend has emerged in the United States. Climate change, once one of the defining issues of American politics, has largely disappeared from the national conversation. The danger, however, has not diminished. According to scientists, the world is entering one of the most dangerous periods ever recorded.
That paradox was the focus of a recent briefing hosted by American Community Media, where climate experts examined why public attention has faded just as the evidence has become more overwhelming. Karen McKinnon, associate professor of statistics and environmental science at UCLA, argued that the science has not weakened. If anything, it has become dramatically stronger. Researchers are no longer limited to demonstrating that the Earth’s average temperature is rising. They can now calculate how much of an individual heat wave, wildfire, flood, or other extreme weather event can be directly attributed to human-caused climate change. Scientific certainty has increased while political will has steadily declined.
One major reason is the dramatic shift in federal climate policy in the United States. Large portions of previous climate initiatives have been rolled back, funding for research and forecasting programs has been reduced, and fossil fuels have once again become a political priority. Other issues now dominate public debate, pushing climate change off the front pages despite the fact that extreme weather continues to inflict greater damage every year. Nature, however, is indifferent to political priorities. The laws of physics continue to operate regardless of whether climate change is featured in an election campaign.
Scientists are also watching another potentially dangerous development. Forecasts suggest that the current El Niño event could become one of the strongest of the century. El Niño itself is nothing new. It has been part of Earth’s natural climate cycle for centuries. What is different today, McKinnon explained, is that it is unfolding on a planet that is already significantly warmer than it was only a few decades ago. That means every El Niño now has the potential to produce hotter temperatures, heavier rainfall, stronger storms, and more destructive weather than similar events in the past. The phenomenon itself has not fundamentally changed. The world around it has.
The consequences are already becoming visible across North America. Southern states are experiencing increasingly destructive storms and flash floods. Along the Pacific coast, rising sea levels and more powerful storm surges threaten coastal communities. Smoke from Canada’s record-breaking wildfires once again blankets major American cities hundreds of miles away, while much of the eastern United States faces heat waves combined with humidity levels capable of overwhelming even healthy adults. Climate change is no longer a collection of isolated disasters. It has become a chain reaction in which one crisis intensifies another.
Climate change does not affect everyone equally. That has become one of the clearest findings of recent research. Heat waves, floods, hurricanes, droughts, and wildfires may be natural phenomena, but their consequences are magnified by social inequality. Wealthier families can retreat into air-conditioned homes, carry comprehensive insurance, relocate away from high-risk areas, and recover more quickly after disasters. Poorer households, immigrants, and many ethnic minority communities often have none of those options. For them, climate change is not primarily an environmental issue. It is an economic, public health, and human rights issue.
Shina Robinson, director of resilience programs at the Asian Pacific Environmental Network, argues that climate communication itself must change. Most people do not worry about the planet’s average temperature. They worry about whether they will still have drinking water, whether they can afford to keep the air conditioning running, whether an elderly parent will survive the next heat wave, or whether their home will still be insured after another flood. Climate change remains an abstract concept when it is presented only through scientific charts and temperature graphs. It becomes immediate and personal when parents watch their children’s asthma worsen because of wildfire smoke, when farmworkers spend entire days laboring in extreme heat, or when families lose everything to rising seas or repeated flooding.
That reality is especially visible in California, Texas, Florida, and throughout the Gulf Coast, where minority communities are disproportionately concentrated in neighborhoods already more vulnerable to heat, flooding, and industrial pollution. One concept has become increasingly familiar across the United States: the urban heat island. Poorer neighborhoods typically have fewer parks and trees and far more concrete and asphalt. As a result, temperatures within the same city can differ by as much as eight to ten degrees Celsius between affluent green neighborhoods and lower-income communities. This is not merely an inconvenience. Extreme heat now claims more American lives each year than hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods combined.
Agricultural workers face some of the greatest risks. Many are immigrants from Latin America who routinely spend eight to ten hours working outdoors as temperatures increasingly exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Many lack adequate health insurance, paid sick leave, or meaningful labor protections. For these workers, climate change is not a prediction about the future. It is an everyday reality that has already transformed their working conditions.
Mark Valentine, senior advisor to the Omega Resilience Awards, believes the defining concept of the coming decades will be resilience. Resilience means much more than surviving a disaster. It means building communities capable of preparing for crises, adapting to them, and recovering quickly afterward. That requires far more than engineering solutions. Higher levees and stronger electrical grids are important, but equally essential are organized neighborhoods, effective early warning systems, trusted local leadership, and ensuring that vulnerable residents receive assistance before disaster strikes rather than afterward. Valentine points out that some of the world’s most effective examples of resilience come from low-income communities that have learned to adapt despite having very limited resources.
Those local lessons, the panel argued, may be exactly what the United States needs most. Climate resilience is not built only in Washington. It is built city by city and neighborhood by neighborhood through decisions about where trees are planted, how streets are redesigned, whether drinking water systems are protected, whether hospitals are prepared for record-breaking heat, and whether low-income families can actually access emergency assistance. Scientists say the central question is no longer whether climate change is happening. That debate has effectively ended. The real question is how quickly societies can adapt to a world that is already changing.
